Mrs. French's English Class

MILLER PLACE HIGH SCHOOL
Welcome To Publications Productions
Sadly, 07-08 was the last year The Publications Productions Class ran. I began cleaning up my site to make space for my current classes, but I couldn't bring myself to delete this page.
These were the best of times and the worst of times. The best came with the self-motivated, reliable, inquisitive students who poured their hearts and souls into their articles, the laughs, the debates, the point-counterpoint, Bob Woodruff!, and the Wikipedia game saving us from losing our sanity at deadline. The worst of times...other than tech issues...there weren't any!
The Journalism Awards from Newsday were so plentiful, we were able to donate a dozen of them to a new local restaurant for their hometown HS decor themed dining room. Students won scholarships and grants, attended high school journalism press conferences hosted by Fred Thiel, and met Hillary Clinton during her first Senate run.
Nearly every one of my students went on to excel in a journalist or communications related field. I am so proud of where their paths lead them and happy to have been a part of that journey. Many of these young journalists went on to intern at Marie Claire, WCBS NY, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, as well as taking on a journalist role in Semester at Sea, traveling around the world.
They are now making their mark as radio personalities, editors, University directors, lawyers, teachers, photographers, and public relations directors.
The last three former students to contact me were thrilled to tell me their employers were Michael Kors, Time, Inc., and Hofstra University. Not too shabby.
Maybe someday it'll happen again, but somehow I think the old adage, "You can never go home" applies here.
While Introduction to Journalism covers all aspects of journalism and school newspaper publishing, Publications Productions focuses on reporting, editing, as well as the layout production of all three Miller Place High School publications: The KROB Panther Press, Dawning 2008 (MPHS Yearbook), and Entre Nous Literary Arts Magazine.
Yearbook Cover by Kathryn McCabe Class of '07
Students begin the year learning about the different types of news articles and what makes quality school journalism. Students also develop editing skills and practice improving both their own and others work. Finally, with the help of veteran editors and reporters, students get exposure to actually producing the paper, working on computer layouts using the PageMaker 7.0 and PhotoShop 6.5 programs and submitting the paper electronically. Throughout the entire year, the class practices interviewing, writing and taking photographs for the Miller Place High School newspaper, KROB Panther Press. Guest speakers and class trips will be offered if available.
As a part of the Productions staff, students will be required to observe the veteran editors and reporters to hone their skills. We have learned that it is best to get right into the thick of it. Experience, in addition to readings, is the best teacher.
In order to get the jist of the PageMaker program, you may click here to view a brief, narrated, overview of the program. Please do not order anything from this site. I will provide you with everything you need to learn the programs and the process. The center column offers you a glimpse of the Fundamentals, Guides & Rulers, and Drawing Tools. It is a great way to view the program at your own pace.
NOTE: Click the PAUSE button at the bottom left of this page before starting tutorial--you can't listen to both!
